Stefan's in-depth knowledge of the media sector reinforces his reputation as a highly regarded lawyer in the field of media and unfair competition law.
Stefan Engels is a partner at our Hamburg office and a member of the Media Sector Group plus the co-head of the international Media Group.
His consulting and litigation work is highly focussed on the area of industrial property law (including copyright, advertising and unfair competition law) and media law (freedom of expression law, press, broadcasting and internet law) as well as data protection.
The main focus of Stefan’s work is advising national and international companies within the media and communications sector. He advises his clients on publications, the drafting of contracts, sales, marketing, advertising and new releases/product launches. Stefan also represents his clients in court in connection with all of the above.
Whilst studying law in Hamburg, Stefan worked for five years as a newsroom assistant at SAT.1 (one of the leading German broadcasting networks) and later as a research assistant at the Hans-Bredow-Institut für Rundfunk und Fernsehen. Whilst there he supervised projects relating to broadcasting law (e.g. on concentration control and on youth protection in the media). He gained his doctorate with a dissertation on television advertising law and he is a specialist in the field of copyright and media law.
Before joining Bird & Bird he was a partner for several years at Hogan Lovells (formerly Lovells).
Stefan is Deputy Chairman of the Committee of Experts for Copyright and Media Law of the Hanseatic Bar Association, visiting lecturer for e-commerce and advertising law and press law at the University of Hamburg and he lectures at the Hamburg Media School.
