What does chancellor Scholz's lost vote of no confidence mean for the German energy transition? Dr. Matthias Lang and Dr. Tobias Büscher are giving an update of what lies ahead.
Shutting down the so-called traffic light coalition on 6 November caused a legislative traffic jam. Many important bills to fix issues in the German energy law framework got stuck in this traffic jam.
With the vote of no confidence on December 16th, it is clear that we will soon have new federal election, probably on February 23rd. So far, the remaining red-green government acted somewhat as if it still had a majority, adding new bills to the traffic jam. The big question is now which initiative is going to make it out of the traffic jam through the election campaign.
For the time being, we will probably need to do what everyone does in a traffic jam before a broken traffic light: Keep an eye on what is happening on the left and the right, mind the traffic around you, proceed carefully, be prepared for sudden changes, and try to get through the intersection without accident.
