Technological governance at the crossroads: the present and future of EU copyright law

Copyright law has always played a substantial role in responding to and shaping the developments of new technologies. At the EU level, several pieces of legislation have been adopted over time, which have harmonized different aspects of copyright law. The Court of Justice of the European Union has also played a pivotal role in construing and refining the copyright infrastructure, inter alia regulating the application of copyright’s exclusive rights and related exceptions and limitations in digital and online environments.

To mark the release of the second edition of Eleonora Rosati’s book devoted to Copyright and the Court of Justice of the European Union (Oxford University Press, 2023), on 1 December 2023 Bird & Bird will host an afternoon of discussions featuring leading experts and stakeholders, who will be reflecting on the thorniest challenges facing copyright law today and how to address them.

Topics will include: the scope of protection of copyright in Europe, responsibilities and liability of online platforms, fundamental rights on the internet, user rights, and the development of Artificial Intelligence.
