Building a fair and social Europe was one of the four priority areas the European Council set out in its 2019-2024 strategic agenda to guide the work of its institutions. The EU Commission set itself the task of building a Europe that "works for people" and is "fit for the digital age", while safeguarding fundamental rights, social fairness and reducing inequalities.
Increased social protection and workers' involvement, more transparency and effective enforcement - these are the specific goals that the EU policy makers sought to implement, either by modifying existing rules and regulations or introducing new ones. As the EU Commission's mandate is drawing to a close, we will take a closer look at the current status of various initiatives that were taken by the EU on the following issues:
- How to ensure effective workers' representation and consultation within larger multinational companies?
- How to provide adequate social protection to platform workers whose total number in the EU economy is expected to reach 43 million in 2025?
- What are the key takeaways from the EU Artificial Intelligence Act 2023 for the employment relationship?
- What are the latest developments on whistleblowers?
- What has been done on putting the "S" in ESG obligations?
And, most importantly, how will these initiatives impact EU or multinational business?
