Broadcasting and OTT Round Table

Bird & Bird's International Media Team will be hosting a networking and informal round table event in Amsterdam on 3 March. Discussions will focus on the opportunities and threats linked with over-the-top broadcasting (OTT), looking particularly at the technological/commercial challenges and the increasingly regulated broadcasting environment. Sandwiched by networking and drinks/canapes (with more networking). This event is aimed at industry and legal professionals operating in over-the-top broadcasting (OTT). Our two main discussions will focus upon:

Knowing the competition

  • The rise (and rise) of OTT-services in sports: are there any notes of caution for current and prospective sport broadcasters?

  • The gradual decline of traditional linear TV, in the Netherlands and abroad - fact or fallacy?

  • Pirates - is the current legal toolkit sufficient to meaningfully combat piracy? Even if it is, is it economical spending €€€ on anti-piracy in an age of VPNs and technologically adept pirates? And should more be done at state and pan-European level?

  • AVMSD-2: will the implementation lead to less or more harmonization? Could the possible ‘Netflix-tax’ in different Member States lead to the end of the Country-of-Origin-principle?

  • The impact of 5G on OTT-services, including some crystal ball gazing

Knowing the customer

  • Digital transformation in broadcasting: making it personal

  • Practical implications of GDPR and ePrivacy rules on processing of audience data – what does it mean for you?

  • Tracking tools for personalisation, profiling and adtech: is consent always needed? How best to obtain it?

  • Privacy settings and transparency

  • Dealing with increasing pan-European divergence on the e-Privacy Directive, and looking ahead to the new ePrivacy Regulation
