About Me

I am a projects and regulatory partner and Chair and Co-Head of International Energy & Utilities Sector Group focused on energy innovation. My work has taken me around the globe.

I help the public sector create and implement innovative energy regulation and policy to change behaviour. This in turn stimulates investment and increases private sector commercial opportunities created by innovative energy regulation, policy and market drivers.

This has enabled greater choice for key stakeholders by increasing the availability of a diverse energy generation mix, both in terms of technology (predominately renewables) and location (decentralised, centralised and cross-border); energy efficiency/productivity solutions; and data and communication infrastructure serving the energy sector.

In addition to the environmental and social benefits, this also stimulates economic benefits including infrastructure investment, R&D and the growth of disruptive business models.

I am: co-editor of 'Renewables: A Practical Handbook' (2010) an international legal, commercial and technical renewable guide; a chapter in the Institute of Director's book 'Clean Tech Clean Profit' (2014) providing guidance to organisations on how they procure low carbon, renewable and energy management solutions; and co-author of the electricity regulatory chapter for Butterworths Competition Law Service since 2012. I have contributed or co-authored the following industry reports: CBI – 'Shining a light: uncovering the business energy opportunity' (2011); SmartGrid GB – 'Energy Bill 2013: Demand Side Response and the Capacity Market in focus' (2013); EEVS/Bloomberg/Green Investment Bank – 'Energy Efficiency Trends' (quarterly since January 2015); and the Environmental Industries Commission reports entitled 'Smart cities and the Environment' (2015) and 'Energy efficiency in property portfolios' (2016). I co-chair a sustainable smart cities initiative.
Experience
  • Energy management - involved in energy management projects for most of my career. I support I&C consumers in creating and deploying energy management strategies. This includes advising property companies on distributed and multi-utilities projects that, to date, supply energy to more than 4 million square meters of residential, retail and commercial space on some of the UK's most iconic developments.
  • Investing in the green economy - advised investors, fund managers banks on over 100 green economy transactions with a strong track record of both closing first of kind deals utilising innovative deal structures and creating and deploying standardised deal structures and processes to reduce transaction time and costs and enabling 'repeat deals'.
  • Regulatory reform to stimulate private sector investment - advised on the new frontier of energy regulatory policy focussed on changing behaviour and stimulating investment. In Eastern Europe I led an expert consortium of commercial, technical and legal consultants tasked by an IFI to draft legislative changes, prepare standardised documents and capacity build to enable the public sector to procure renewable, low carbon and energy efficiency solutions funded by the private sector.
  • Traditional energy, utilities & natural resources - including utility companies creating innovative new business streams within heavily regulated sectors and petroleum and mining companies entering new markets.
  • Advised on projects for which clients have won awards including the Guardian Sustainable Business Award, Energy (2011), the Combined Heat and Power Association Community and Residential Award (2009) and the Australasian Legal Business Infrastructure Deal of the Year Award (2005).
