As a senior associate in the Tech Transactions team, I primarily advise clients on technology contracts across the Technology and Defence sectors. I focus on emerging and cutting edge technology (Artificial Intelligence in particular), more 'traditional' defence contracting, and the intersection of the two - helping clients navigate the rapidly evolving Defence Tech sector.
I advise clients on technology focused contracts. This ranges from software development, licencing and maintenance agreements, cloud and SaaS projects, complex technology procurements, to multi-billion pound contracts for the building of naval vessels.
Emerging technology is a real interest of mine. I help clients navigate the risks and legal issues which present themselves when buying or selling new technologies (including AI, blockchain and the Internet of Things). Being surrounded by likeminded individuals at Bird & Bird is an important part of this.
I support clients on high-value, strategic projects in the defence and security sector, including multi-billion-pound contracts for the development and deployment of advanced defence platforms. I also work closely with technology and DefenceTech companies, advising them on the approach to (and contracts for) supplying their innovative technologies into government.
A key focus of my practice is advising clients on the commercial and legal considerations surrounding the development, deployment, and sourcing of artificial intelligence systems. This includes negotiating AI-related procurement contracts, addressing complex issues around intellectual property, liability, transparency and accuracy. I help clients navigate the evolving legal landscape to ensure AI solutions are implemented effectively while balancing commercial objectives and risk management.
I also support clients on a broad range of other technology-focused contracts, covering software development and licensing, SaaS subscriptions, technology transfer and licensing, IT services and large-scale technology procurements.
During my time at Bird & Bird, I have gained valuable in-house experience through secondments with Arm (the leading semiconductor design business), a large prime defence contractor, and a "Giga Project" in the Middle East (focusing on technology procurement). I have also worked on a number of 'virtual' secondments and 'virtual general counsel' arrangements. All of this has given me a wealth of experience in working closely with in-house legal teams and developing a deep insight into the operational challenges they face. As a result, I have a real understanding of how to deliver pragmatic and commercially focused advice that aligns with clients' strategic objectives.
