The European Commission published on 7 June 2021 a proposal for a revision of the State Aid Guidelines for environmental protection and energy a 2014-2020 (“Energy and Environmental State aid guidelines” or “EEAG”). Under this proposal, these guidelines could be renamed "Climate, Energy and Environmental State aid Guidelines" (“CEEAG”). This project is subject to public consultation until 2 August 2021: all interested parties can therefore submit their comments on the proposal until that date.

The adoption of the new guidelines is then scheduled for the end of 2021.

In its revision proposal, the European Commission wishes to extend the scope of the guidelines to all technologies supporting the European Green Deal, as well as to new areas such as energy efficiency, clean mobility, the circular economy or biodiversity by creating new categories of aid. The proposal also aims to simplify access to state aid by, for example, removing the obligation to notify major environmental projects individually under aid schemes already authorised by the Commission.
