About Me

I work across multiple sectors with organisations using data, content and technology. I have particular expertise in the exploitation of content and data in the media and sports industries. Alongside deep technical expertise, I offer clients insight on business and strategic issues, particularly for entrepreneurial, high-growth, internationalising businesses.

Data, Content & Technology: I lead the firm's cross-practice Digital Rights & Assets group, which advises clients across all sectors on the use of data, artificial intelligence (AI), tokenisation and digital identities and trust services. I advise clients internationally on arrangements relating to the use, licensing, monetisation and exploitation of data and content as well as the development, use, licensing, outsourcing and migration of complex technologies and technology services.

Sports Media: I have over 25 years of experience working with a wide range of leading sports organisations on the utilisation of media, data and commercial rights, as well as related agency, host broadcasting, data services and outsourced technology arrangements.

Broadcasting and video services: I head the firm's broadcasting group, where I advise on complex commercial deals and regulatory matters including the UK (Ofcom Broadcasting Code, BCAP Code) and international regulation of video and broadcast services (e.g., the Audio Visual Media Services Directive).

My clients range from multinational media, technology and data businesses to kitchen-table start-ups, including telecoms, technology providers and innovators, broadcasters and OTT platforms, consumer brands, sports and entertainment rights holders, news and information organisations, gaming and esports companies, investors and financiers.

In 2021, I was shortlisted as one of Europe's most innovative lawyers in the Financial Times' annual awards.

Testimonials

'Richard McMorris is exceptional to work with. He embodies the right blend of being a close partner to my business (almost an out-sourced GC) with arms-length independence of thought. He is very strong, leading advice in his areas, prioritising key points and managing risk appropriately to facilitate negotiations, finding ways to solve problems; a partner in deal-making, not just the legal adviser. An accomplished guide when needing expertise from others; not merely referring within the firm, but finding the right specific partner, and being clear when a 3rd party would be more relevant. Enjoyable to work with, thrives on the energy of business as well as the precision of law. '
