Compliance countdown begins as EU AI Act prepares to take effect

The Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act), a landmark piece of legislation, was officially published in the Official Journal today, marking one of the most significant legislative achievements of the outgoing EU mandate. This Act will enter into force on 1 August 2024 and will become applicable in stages over a period of six to 36 months. The majority of its provisions will be in effect from 2 August 2026.

This new Regulation is considered the world’s most extensive legislative framework for AI developers, deployers, and importers, aims to ensure that AI systems introduced in the European Union’s internal market are secure, comply with existing laws on fundamental rights, and align with EU values.
