Maria Fernandez

I am an associate in Bird & Bird's Intellectual Property department in the Madrid office.

Over the past ten years I have worked in the field of intellectual property, developing my career in various areas. From my beginnings at an intellectual property boutique I have always advised clients on the possibilities of IP protection according to their specific needs.

As I started my IP career I quickly realised that I loved the global approach this area offers. Being able to deal with complex cases that usually involve a multi-jurisdictional perspective and a quick response gave me the necessary background to manage large international patent and trademark portfolios.

To my clients I am recognised as a fast and creative lawyer, always ready to go the extra mile to get a positive answer. From my work prosecuting patents I have taken the problem-solution approach to my personal life and my work life, and immensely enjoy solving the complex day-to-day troubles for the companies I represent.

Currently I work with brand management on large scale projects, focusing on trademark protection in Spain and EU markets, as well as the usual dealings with other jurisdictions. Due to my experience, I sometimes lecture students on Spanish and European intellectual property law, and also participate in seminars for clients to spread the word about the wonderful and powerful tool IP law can bring to their companies.

I am always prepared and ready for a new challenge.

• My career started as a lawyer in a boutique IP firm, rapidly moving to one of the biggest IP agencies in Spain. I have indepth experience dealing with prosecution for both trade mark and patent portfolios.

• I am currently handling brand management portfolios for top companies, mostly in the retail and fashion sector.
