Bird & Bird partners with an innovative NFT and blockchain-based project created to fund treatment of cancer patients

Bird & Bird lawyers from the Warsaw office provided pro bono legal assistance to the "Buy My Cancer" project created by the Alivia Cancer Foundation in Poland. The project is an innovative model allowing the foundation to raise money for charitable purposes via Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT). The money raised will fund the costly treatment of patients with malignant tumours, who remain under the care of the Alivia Cancer Foundation, and in particular will cover the cost of treatment methods that are not reimbursed in Poland.

The project is a joint collaboration of the Alivia Cancer Foundation, the Maria SkÅ‚odowska-Curie National Research Institute of Oncology in Gliwice and artist PaweÅ‚ SWANSKI. It is a combination of science, art, medicine and business in an effort to save patients’ lives. The project involves using pictures of real cancer cells that are transferred to works of art which are then turned into NFT which are proof of donation to the foundation.

Bird & Bird's lawyers prepared the legal and tax concept of the fundraising, drafted a request to the Director of the National Fiscal Inquiry Office for an individual tax ruling, prepared the rules and regulations of the project, and performed a legal review of the information materials.

The following lawyers from our Warsaw office were involved in the pro bono work: Tomasz Zalewski, Bartlomiej Sikora, Mateusz Bednarski, Aleksandra Cywinska, and Michal Smiechowski.
