Bird & Bird appoints technology and data protection specialist Nicholas Boyle as a partner in Sydney

International law firm Bird & Bird today appoints technology and data protection expert Nicholas Boyle as a partner in the firm’s Sydney office.

Nicholas joins the firm from DLA Piper after 5 years as a technology and cyber partner in the Sydney office, Nicholas led the Sydney IP and technology team for 4 of those years. Over the years, he has built a strong practice in the technology and data protection space and advises on M&A and data breach response.

Nicholas’ practice also focusses on advising major Australian clients, particularly in relation to more traditional tech procurement services. He has close connections with US-based clients and will work closely with the team on the ground in San Francisco to maximise those relationships.

Following the recent arrival of Masi Zaki and Bill Smith in early October, Nicholas’ arrival is a key part of Bird & Bird’s strategic growth strategy in Sydney. The team has grown significantly over the past two years with two partner promotions in the IP practice, and the appointment of five new partners in the firm’s Corporate M&A, Dispute Resolution, Finance & Financial Regulation and Sports teams.

Shane Barber, managing partner at Bird & Bird in Australia, says: “Nicholas’ arrival is a key part of our strategic ambitions at Bird & Bird to grow our technology and data protection team in Sydney. His extensive experience will bolster our capabilities to support our clients in Australia on technology matters, particularly in the data protection and privacy space. I look forward to seeing him flourish at Bird & Bird in Sydney and work closely with our colleagues across the firm’s international network.”

Marjolein Geus (Chair), Fabian Niemann, Ted Chwu, Ronald Hendrikx, co-heads of the Tech and Comms group at Bird & Bird, comment: “We are delighted to welcome Nicholas who brings a range of technology and data protection expertise to our international Tech and Comms group. His experience advising on M&A and data breach response matters alongside his close connections with US-based clients will be a huge benefit to our team. Welcome Nicholas!”

Nicholas adds: “I am excited to be joining Bird & Bird – a firm with a renowned reputation for being a collegiate, international law firm. I look forward to working with my colleagues to maintain and grow our existing client relationships and ensuring the firm’s success in Australia and across the Bird & Bird network.”
