Tokyo

Japan is the fourth largest economy in the World and the EU’s second-largest trading partner in Asia. Bird and Bird’s world-leading technology and IP practice and Japan’s technology rich business and culture is a natural fit.

Our Tokyo office (Bird & Bird Gaikokuho Jimu Bengoshi Jimusho) opened on 2 September 2024.  The office supports our clients on outbound cross-border transactions from Japan into the UK, Europe, the Middle East and Asia-Pacific in key industry sectors such as automotive, renewable energy, life sciences, and technology and media in relation English law matters and working together with local lawyers in the Bird & Bird’s global network. The office provides legal advice on M&A, technology and outsourcing transactions, IP, dispute resolution and data protection working with other Bird & Bird offices around the globe.

The office does not provide Japanese law advice, and will continue to work closely with Japanese law firms to assist clients on Japanese law matters.

Our Tokyo office allows us to stay closer to our Japanese clients by being geographically close in the same time zone, which enables us to build stronger relationships with our clients. Bird & Bird’s affiliated consulting company, OXYGY, also has an office in Tokyo, and we work together to provide holistic business/legal solutions to the issues our clients are facing internationally.

Our Tokyo office is supported by our Global Japan Group, with members based in various offices in the Bird & Bird’s global network who have a rich insight into Japanese business practices.
